Josef William Back

Josef paints images combining every day experience, personal mythology and pseudo-metaphysics. His paradoxically naïf and materially devoted practice results often in a feral and experimental aesthetic. Although firmly grounded in process and what image making can make available, when works do escape the studio setting, Josef aims toward images that operate in multiple dimensions, from the purely sensual and decorative, through the formal all the way to the conceptual and mythic. Although there are uncontrived synchronicities and relationships between individual works, the only true unifying intention of Josef’s practice is a perpetual process of world building, or perhaps more soberly, what it means to create believable images when starting as closely to 0 as you can.
